One of the World’s Rarest Breeds Here in the Maritime
You may have seen him if you live in the Halifax / Dartmouth area.
He’s the one with the big doggy smile, happily trotting along the various pathways, sidewalks and lakes in the Forest Hills area. At present the Stabijhoun ranks among the top ten rarest breeds in the world, numbering just over 6,000 dogs worldwide with approximately 300 located in North America and only one in Nova Scotia.
The Stabyhoun is an extremely intelligent dog with a "can do" attitude and gentle, friendly nature. They are talented waterfowl retrievers with a soft mouth, capable in the field flushing game or getting down and dirty to take care of the rodent problem. These dogs excel in almost everything they are asked to do. They participate in agility, rally o, barn hunting, tracking .... and the list goes on! Lots of energy you are probably thinking by now. True, the Staby will spend the day doing whatever you do and has a deep reserve of energy to draw from but true to their "stand by me " name they also are just as willing to chill on the sofa watching a movie with you, help you fix the kitchen sink, or lay quietly at your feet while you are working. They are naturally curious, very devoted, sweet natured and accepting. They want nothing more than to please their people but have a sensitive soul and can be crushed if subjected to rough handling or harsh treatment, which will cause them to "shut down".
By selectively seeking to broaden the gene pool within North America, we are helping to protect the breed for the future. Importantly, we are working hard to breed only healthy, happy puppies that will make wonderful family pets. Kobe is already the proud father of one litter in Wisconsin and is currently waiting on the birth of his most recent lady friend “Pearl,” living in Ontario.
What Kobe would really like to see is more Stabyhouns in the Maritimes to do fun activities with. Featured below: Kobe and his owner Joan.
